Frequently Asked Questions from Parents About Baby Carrying

April 10, 2026

When parents start babywearing, they often have all sorts of questions. That’s completely understandable. You want your baby to be safe and comfortable, well-supported, and for the experience to feel comfortable for you as well.

In conversations with parents, certain questions come up time and again. Below, we answer some of the most common questions about baby carriers and wraps.

ByKay

Isn't my baby too small to carry?

Many parents wonder if a newborn baby can already be carried in a baby carrier. In most cases, the answer is yes, as long as the carrier is suitable for newborns and the baby is supported properly and ergonomically.

All ByKay baby carriers can be used starting at approximately 3.5 kilograms. However, there are also babies who start out even smaller, for example, when they are born prematurely or dysmature. The Tiny Click, MyKay, and the wraps are particularly well-suited for these tiniest of babies. They fit a small baby’s body especially well and support a newborn’s natural posture.

So keep this in mind when choosing a baby carrier. Does a brand claim that their carrier can be used from birth, but do you still feel a little unsure? In that case, it might be helpful to have a babywearing consultant take a look with you. ByKay also has babywearing consultants on staff, so if you have any questions or would like personalized advice, feel free to send us a message on WhatsApp

How do I know if my baby is positioned correctly in the carrier?

Newborn babies naturally have a slightly rounded back and automatically tuck their legs up slightly. A good ergonomic baby carrier supports this position and ensures that the knees are slightly higher than the bottom, with the carrier providing support from one knee pit to the other. This is also known as the “frog position” or ergonomic M-position.

Use this quick check when you’re about to carry your baby:

M-position visible
The knees are higher than the buttocks, and the legs are supported from the back of one knee to the back of the other.

Back naturally arched
The back may be slightly rounded (no forced straight or hollow back).

Neck well supported
In young babies, the neck is supported without the head being constricted.

Held high enough
You can easily give your baby a kiss on the head without having to bend over too far.

Unrestricted breathing
The face is uncovered, the chin is not resting on the chest, and the nose and mouth are uncovered.

Together as one
Make sure the baby carrier fits snugly and is tightened enough. It should be comfortable, but feel like a tight hug.

Won't my baby get too hot in a baby carrier?

This is a question that comes up often, especially in the spring and summer. When you’re carrying your baby, the baby carrier and your body together create an extra layer of warmth. That’s why your baby usually needs slightly fewer clothes than when they’re in the stroller. Often, one less layer is enough.

It helps to check your baby’s neck regularly. If it feels warm and dry, you’re good to go. If it feels damp or sweaty, you can take off a layer.

How long can I carry my baby?

There is no time limit on babywearing. It is the most natural position for your baby. As long as both you and your baby are comfortable, you can carry your baby. Many parents use a baby carrier at different times of the day. For example, during a walk, when their baby has trouble sleeping, or when they want to do something at home with their hands free.

Some parents use a baby carrier more for practical reasons, such as when running errands. Others have a fussy baby and carry them all day because it’s the only place where the baby is somewhat calm.
You’ll naturally sense when it’s enough for both you and your baby. The most important thing is that carrying remains a relaxing experience for both of you.

What if my baby is fussy in the carrier?

Some babies need a little time to get used to a baby carrier. That doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t like it. Movement often helps. When you start walking gently or rock them softly, many babies relax on their own. The movement reminds them of the rhythm they felt in the womb.

Timing can also make a difference. Try carrying your baby when they’ve just been fed and are calm and awake. With a little practice and some minor adjustments, many parents find that their baby actually ends up enjoying being carried.

Can I carry my baby facing forward?

We recommend carrying your baby facing you, as this is the most ergonomic position. Their legs are in the familiar M-position and their back is nicely rounded. This way, your little one feels safe and isn’t easily overwhelmed.

Does your baby want to look around all the time? If so, it’s best to carry them on your hip or back—it’s just as fun and better for both of you. Would you rather carry your babyfacing forward? You can do that, too! Just don’t do it for too long at a time, and as soon as you notice your baby isn’t comfortable anymore, turn them around!

My baby doesn't want to be carried. Do you guys have any tips?

Yes, some babies need time to get used to being carried. That’s completely normal. Here are a few tips that might help:

  • Start carrying in a familiar environment
  • Do not stand still, make quiet movements such as rocking or walking
  • Try wearing at different times of the day
  • Start with a short carry and build up slowly

If these tips don't help, it might be helpful to schedule a babywearing consultation. Feel free to contact us via WhatsApp.

Can I put the baby carrier on alone?

Yes, all ByKay baby carriers are designed for parents who often go out alone with their baby. With a little practice (and ourinstructional videos), you’ll have it down in no time. Tip: Practice with your partner and/or in front of a mirror at first, until you get the hang of it and feel more confident. Trust us, after a few tries, you’ll feel like a pro.

Can people with back or shoulder problems use this baby carrier?

Yes! Our baby carriers are designed to distribute your baby’s weight evenly, minimizing the strain on your back and shoulders. The wide straps or padded shoulder straps provide extra comfort. When you carry your baby ergonomically, you engage your muscles in a healthy way—essentially working your core and back muscles. Your back pain may even decrease or disappear.

What to do with prints when wearing?

Light indentations from wearing the garment are normal and no cause for concern. This is similar to the indentations left by tight jeans in the backs of the knees and is usually normal and harmless. Some babies may develop blue feet; this is usually related to lower blood pressure while they are sleeping. If you are concerned about blood circulation or other health issues, we recommend discussing this with your pediatrician.

Can I also wear in the summer?

Yes, carrying your baby is always a little extra cozy; two bodies close together keep each other warm. But don’t worry—our baby carriers are made from breathable materials like cotton and linen, so they’re perfect for summer. When it’s hot, just dress your baby in a onesie and you’re all set!

Should my baby wear a coat while wearing in winter?

No, better not. Your body heat also acts as an extra layer. A thick coat is often too much and isn’t as comfortable. Dress your baby in layers and use an inlay (a fleece liner for your baby carrier), a carrier cover, or a babywearing jacket. That way, your baby will stay nice and warm and comfortable.

Will my jacket also fit over the baby carrier?

Sometimes! A wide coat or baby carrier often fits fine, but be careful that your baby doesn't get too warm. You don't have to buy a new coat in particular: many parents wear their coats open, as you and your baby warm each other, tummy to tummy. You can also choose an Inlay for your baby carrier or carrier cover that you simply attach over your carrier. This keeps you and your baby cozy and warm.

Can I wash the baby carrier?

Yes, absolutely! ByKay baby carriers are machine washable at 30 degrees. Use a mild detergent and no fabric softener, and don’t leave the baby carrier in the washing machine while it’s still damp, as this can cause the metal parts to corrode.

It is best to let the baby carrier air dry; however, if your ribbed fabric carrier comes out of the wash looking a bit flat, you can fluff it up by putting it in the dryer for just a moment when it is almost dry.

Are ByKay baby carriers safe for my baby?

Yes, ByKay baby carriers are designed with safety in mind and tested to the highest standards. Our products are certified in accordance with the guidelines of the U.S. Children’s Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) and meet ASTM safety standards.

Our products are also certified in accordance with the European standards NPR-CEN/TR 16512:2015 and EN 13209:2. We are also OEKO-TEX certified. It is always important to follow the safety instructions to ensure safe use.

Growing Together Through Caring

Carrying a baby is something that many parents and babies grow into together. At first, it might feel like you’re still figuring things out, but over time it often becomes a natural part of the day.

Your baby close by, the world around you in motion, and yet still room to follow your own rhythm. That is exactly why so many parents ultimately find babywearing to be such a valuable experience.
