As a new parent, you quickly discover how wonderful it is to carry your child. Your baby is close to you, you have your hands free, and you don't have to struggle with a stroller through the narrow aisles in the store.

In the beginning, you will probably carry your baby on your front a lot. But there will come a time when you start to find it heavier and your baby suddenly wants to see everything. Time for the next step: carrying on your back.

When to carry baby on your back?

The question of when to carry baby on your back is supernormal. The answer: as soon as your little one can sit up independently. Then your baby also has enough control to sit independently on his or her back.

Always practice back carrying before you start carrying your baby. For example, with a doll or ask someone to help. You want to carry your baby safely and relaxed on your back.

Why back carrying is fine

Carrying your baby on your back has benefits for you and your little one.

  • Your body will thank you: carrying a growing baby during a long session can feel like a mini workout. The weight is distributed even better on your back, making it feel lighter.
  • More freedom: you literally have your arms freer. Walking, cooking, shopping, even pouring a cup of coffee is easier with your baby on your back.
  • Babies are explorers: lying on their back, your child can comfortably look around and discover the world around them without having to sit in an awkward position.

Carrying baby on your back with a sling

You may be wondering: is it possible to carry a baby on your back with a sling? Yes, absolutely! A woven sling or Mei Tai is perfect for carrying your baby securely and ergonomically on your back. Do you find tying knots daunting or too complicated? Then a baby carrier is ideal, as it is easy to fasten.

Whatever option you choose, make sure your baby is always in the correct position: knees higher than the buttocks, back nicely arched and face toward you. This will ensure that your baby is carried ergonomically.

Why facing forward carry is not a good idea

Many parents choose facing forward carry when their child wants to start exploring the world around them. Yet this is not the best option.

  • Not ergonomic - facing forward carrying does not provide good support for your little one's back and hips. Babies then often hang with legs stretched out and a hollow back, as shown in the image above.
  • Too many stimuli - when things get busy, your baby can't turn away or take refuge with you.
  • Not comfy for you - your baby's weight pulls forward and you feel it considerably. You want to be able to carry your baby comfortably, of course.

A good solution? Back carry! Your baby can look around and stay in an ergonomic position. Win-win.

From when to carry baby on your back?

Briefly, you can carry your child on your back when he can sit up independently, usually between 6 to 9 months. Build up slowly, take time to practice (with a doll) and choose a sling, baby carrier or Mei Tai that is suitable for back carrying.
