At what age can I start using a baby carrier?

April 10, 2026

Your baby has just been born, and you’re wondering: when can you actually start carrying them? The short answer: often, you can start as early as day one. But as with everything related to your baby, the details lie in the specifics.

Wearing your baby isn’t a trick you learn later on. It’s actually an extension of what your baby already knows: being close to you, being carried, and feeling your movements. And that’s exactly why a baby carrier can be so wonderful right from the start.

From the very beginning

A newborn baby has one need above all else: to be close to you. In a good, ergonomic baby carrier, your baby can immediately feel that sense of security—provided you choose a carrier that’s suitable for newborns and offers adequate support for the neck and back.

M-position

The natural position is key here. Your baby sits with a slightly rounded back and legs tucked up, also known as the ergonomic M-position. This ensures that the hips can develop properly and that your baby is comfortable.

Many parents find baby slings comfortable at first, because they form a cocoon-like fit around your baby’s body. It doesn’t get any cozier than that. But there are also baby carriers and other baby carriers designed specifically for the littlest ones that provide just as much support.

What makes a baby carrier suitable for use from birth?

Not every baby carrier is automatically suitable for a newborn. It’s important to keep a few things in mind. The baby carrier should provide good support for your baby without requiring additional inserts that could affect their posture.

In principle, all ByKay baby carriers can be used from day one. But what if your baby is premature or underweight? Or just a little on the small side? In that case, choose a baby carrier designed specifically for this purpose: a Tiny Click carrier or a MyKay (which is a hybrid between a wrap and a carrier). A wrap, when used correctly, can also be used for your tiniest little one.

In addition, the baby’s face should always remain uncovered and clearly visible. You want to be able to check on your baby easily, without any trouble.

An ergonomic baby carrier grows with your baby. This means you can adjust it as your child grows, without compromising on comfort.

Why starting early is actually a good thing

Many people think that babywearing only becomes useful once your baby is a little older. But it can actually be a game-changer, especially in the first few weeks. Your baby still needs to get used to the world outside the womb, and babywearing helps make that transition easier.

Your movements, your warmth, and your scent provide comfort. It can help soothe restlessness, aid in napping, and even relieve colic. Meanwhile, you have your hands free. You can make a cup of coffee, take a quick walk, or give your older child some attention—all without having to put your baby down.

It often feels less like “doing something” and more like “being together.”

Listen to your instincts (and your baby)

Although you can often start carrying your baby right from birth, it’s important to always listen to your own instincts. Does something still feel a bit daunting? Take the time to practice. Do it together or in front of a mirror. Start with short sessions and build up gradually.

Your baby will also let you know when something feels good or not. By carrying your baby, you’ll get better and better at recognizing those cues. That naturally makes the whole process more relaxing.

There’s no perfect time to start. Whenever it feels right for you, that’s the right time.

Wear it as part of your daily routine

What starts as a practical solution often becomes an integral part of your daily routine. Whether you’re popping out for a quick errand, taking a nap in between tasks, or simply enjoying a moment of peace, your baby carrier moves with you.

And perhaps that is the greatest strength of wearing it: it adapts to your life, rather than the other way around.

So, when can you start using a baby carrier? As soon as you and your baby are ready. And that moment is often closer than you think.
