Sometimes functionality and design go very well together. Especially when you get the right people on it who add up their passion for their own craft, multiply it and make it come together in a beautiful final product. Meet the Rebel Carrier!
Bas, owner of shoemaking/leatherworking company Bas and Kay from ByKay appeared to have much in common: the love of beautiful and good products. The best for their customers. And an eye for detail. "It all started with a mutual friend." explains Kay. "I had been walking around with the idea of bringing a cool carrier to the market for some time. A carrier with everything in it that appeals to men (and tough women ): tough, comfortable and with beautiful, luxurious materials. As a biker, I immediately thought of leather. But how do you properly incorporate that into a baby carrier? When that friend paired my idea with the man who knows EVERYTHING about leather, the idea for the Rebel Carrier was born. Bas was immediately enthusiastic."
Bas: "My brain immediately started running at full speed. I loved the idea of using leather for a baby carrier. Leather is a wonderful material: it is warm in winter and cool in summer, it is supple and skin-friendly, easily wicks away moisture and feels wonderfully soft. Not for nothing was leather already used in the Middle Ages for clothing, footwear and covering babies. In addition, leather molds fantastically to the body. It is just like a pair of shoes: the longer you wear them, the more supple they become. Because I have been working intensively with leather for 34 years, I immediately knew which leathers to use for this. So I went to Kay with a lot of rolls of leather under my arm and our first brainstorming session was a fact."
Right from the start, it was clear that appearance, comfort and ease of use were equally important with the new carrier. Bas: "During my studies at art school, I learned how to turn a beautiful design into a functional and user-friendly product. That is also what we do in our shoe workshop; innovating and problem-solving for well-known brands. I used that knowledge and experience for the Rebel Carrier."
Kay: "We started from the principle of lumbar support in motorcyclists. Bas translated that into a first prototype. Because we are both super critical and really only go for the best of the best, we were only satisfied after 6 models." Bas: "I always strive for a top product in terms of appearance, but certainly also in terms of comfort and wearability. Kay does the same. Her enthusiasm and creativity makes me keep raising the bar. Eventually you end up with a top product!"
The Rebel Carrier is now in use by several clients and babywearing consultants and they are very enthusiastic. Kay: "Even people who were a bit hesitant in the beginning are amazed by the comfort and suppleness of the leather. And that enthusiasm will only increase as the carrier is used more often. I am proud to have been able to develop such a unique product together with Bas!"
The Rebel Carrier is suitable for belly-carrying newborns up to about 9 months. The lumbar piece is available in black or brown organic leather. The laced cotton strips come in many different colors and you can easily change them yourself, so you have a "custom made" unique one. So several carriers for the price of 1! The Rebel Carrier is made in our own country and can therefore always be customized. We like to think along with you!
The Rebel Carrier will certainly not be the last special product in the ByKay range. "I am always busy in my head with ideas, to make our range even more beautiful and better.
